Mitsubishi 4G63T is a 2.0L (1997 cc) petrol engine with 195-291 HP, 278-407 Nm, 9:1 compression ratio. Fuel consumption: 8.2-14.6 L/100km. Typical service life: 250 000.
Description
The Mitsubishi 4G63T is a turbocharged four-cylinder 2.0-liter engine that became a legend of world rally through its victories in Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution. Produced from 1988 to 2007, it was installed in Lancer Evolution I-IX, Eclipse GSX, Galant VR-4, and other sporting Mitsubishi models. The cast iron cylinder block features siamese sleeves (no gaps between cylinders), ensuring maximum strength with minimal dimensions. The aluminum cylinder head contains 16 valves and DOHC system. The turbocharger is typically Mitsubishi TD05 or more powerful versions on later evolutions. The 4G63T feature is the MIVEC system (Mitsubishi Innovative Valve timing Electronic Control) on later versions, allowing variable valve timing for optimizing power and torque. The engine also features an air-to-air intercooler for cooling compressed air from the turbocharger. In various Evolution versions, the engine developed from 250 to 320 horsepower, but real power was often higher due to conservative Japanese ratings. Torque ranges from 350-430 Nm depending on version. The engine is designed for high loads and can handle RPM over 8000. The 4G63T has enormous tuning potential due to strong block construction. With factory internal components, 400-450 horsepower can be safely achieved, and with forged pistons and connecting rods - over 700 horsepower. Popular modifications include larger turbochargers, improved intake and exhaust systems, and programmable engine management units. The engine is used in motorsport due to its reliability and response to modifications. Many rally teams still use 4G63T derivatives for competitions. Fuel consumption is 10-15 liters per 100 km with moderate driving, requiring high-octane fuel (minimum 95, preferably 98) and frequent oil changes due to high turbocharger loads.
