Corolla 12th Generation
Toyota
2018 - present
Description
The twelfth-generation Toyota Corolla, internally designated as the E210, marked a turning point for the world’s best-selling nameplate. Moving away from its long-standing image as a conservative "appliance" on wheels, Toyota’s engineers focused on creating a vehicle that was as engaging to drive as it was reliable. This transformation was made possible by the TNGA-C platform, which lowered the car’s center of gravity and introduced a more sophisticated multi-link rear suspension. The result was a Corolla that felt surprisingly sharp and planted, successfully challenging the more "driver-focused" rivals in its class.
The story began in early 2018, with the hatchback’s debut in Geneva, signaling a new, aggressive design language. By the time the sedan and Touring Sports (estate) versions were unveiled later that year, it was clear that Toyota had unified its global lineup under a more premium and cohesive identity. When production ramped up in 2019, the E210 became a truly international project, manufactured in facilities across the globe to meet the specific needs of different regions.
A defining characteristic of this generation is its massive array of powertrains, tailored to local fuel costs and environmental regulations. Depending on the market, the Corolla is powered by a variety of engines: 1.2L 8NR-FTS (Europe, Australia, China), 1.2L 9NR-FTS (China), 1.5L M15A-FKS (Japan, Europe, Oceania), 1.5L M15B-FKS (China - GAC Toyota), 1.5L M15C-FKS (China - FAW Toyota), 1.6L 1ZR-FE / 1ZR-FAE (Middle East, SE Asia, Eastern Europe), 1.6L 1ZR-FBE (Brazil), 1.6L G16E-GTS (Global - GR Corolla), 1.8L 2ZR-FE / 2ZR-FAE (North America, Middle East, Pakistan), 1.8L 2ZR-FXE (Global Hybrid - Europe, Japan, Australia, SE Asia), 1.8L 8ZR-FXE (China), 1.8L 2ZR-FBE (Brazil, Thailand), 2.0L M20A-FKS (North America, Australia, Taiwan), 2.0L M20C-FKS (China - Levin GT), 2.0L M20E-FKS (China - Allion/Levin), 2.0L M20A-FXS (Europe, North America, Japan), and the 2.0L M20A-FKB (Brazil Flex-fuel).
Beyond the hardware, the E210 moved the needle in terms of technology. It popularized the Direct Shift-CVT, which utilizes a physical first gear to provide a more immediate and natural acceleration feel. Combined with a cabin filled with higher-grade materials and the standard inclusion of the Toyota Safety Sense suite, this generation proved that a budget-friendly compact car could still feel like a premium product. It remains a testament to Toyota’s ability to modernize a legend without losing the core reliability that made it famous in the first place.
