Description
The Chevrolet 265 was the first engine in the small-block V8 family and the beginning of one of the most successful engine lineages in automotive history. Introduced in 1955, this 4.3-liter V8 replaced Chevrolet's earlier straight-six as the brand's new performance and premium engine option. Although modest by later standards, the 265 laid the foundation for nearly every classic Chevrolet small-block that followed.
Chevrolet developed the 265 to be lighter, more compact, and more efficient than earlier V8 designs while still delivering meaningful gains in performance. It used a cast-iron block and heads, an overhead-valve layout, a timing chain drive, and a two-valve-per-cylinder design that would define the traditional small-block architecture for decades. Depending on carburetion and compression, factory output ranged from roughly 162 to 180 HP, which was impressive for a mainstream V8 of the mid-1950s.
In practical terms, the 265 matters less for raw numbers than for historical importance. It introduced the packaging, serviceability, and upgrade-friendly character that made the small-block Chevrolet famous. Early passenger cars, hot rods, and vintage restorations still value the 265 because it represents the true starting point of the classic Chevy V8 story.
