Description
The Chevrolet 283 is one of the most famous early small-block V8s and the engine that firmly established Chevrolet's reputation for accessible V8 performance. Introduced in 1957 as an evolution of the original 265, the 283 quickly became known for its willingness to rev, broad usability, and major role in late-1950s Chevrolet performance culture.
Chevrolet enlarged the original small-block design to create more power and flexibility without abandoning the compact architecture that had already proven successful. The 283 retained the cast-iron block and heads, OHV valvetrain, and timing chain layout of the 265, but with more displacement and a wider range of carbureted and fuel-injected versions. Output varied significantly by specification, ranging from about 185 HP up to 283 HP in the most famous fuel-injected high-performance version.
In real-world use, the 283 became a favorite both in ordinary passenger cars and in early performance applications. It offered a strong mix of drivability, tuning potential, and reliability, and it remains one of the most admired small-blocks from Chevrolet's early performance years. For many enthusiasts, the 283 is the engine that turned the small-block from a good idea into a genuine legend.
