Description

The Chevrolet 307 is a lesser-known but historically relevant member of the small-block V8 family. Produced from the late 1960s into the early 1970s, it filled the gap between smaller economy-minded V8s and the more performance-oriented 327 and 350. It was created primarily for smooth everyday use rather than for headline-grabbing muscle-car performance.

Chevrolet built the 307 by combining a 283 crankshaft with a 327 block, creating a 5.0-liter small-block that retained the familiar cast-iron pushrod design and broad small-block compatibility. In factory tune, power was modest by the standards of the performance era, generally ranging from about 200 to 220 HP. That put the 307 squarely in the role of a practical, durable passenger-car V8 rather than an enthusiast favorite.

Today, the 307 matters more as a correct period engine than as a high-demand performance choice. It still offers the simplicity, sound, and serviceability of a classic Chevrolet small-block, but its main appeal lies in originality and straightforward cruising rather than outright speed.
