The Nissan SR20DET is a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four petrol engine produced from 1989 to 2002, used across a wide range of sporting Nissan models including the 180SX, Silvia (S13/S14/S15), 200SX, Pulsar GTI-R, and Bluebird SSS, and one of the most widely modified Japanese performance engines of its generation thanks to its compact size, strong factory internals, and huge aftermarket support.
Producing around 250hp and 275Nm of torque in its most common factory tunes, the SR20DET uses a DOHC 16-valve aluminum head, a single turbocharger, and a compression ratio of 8.5:1 lowered specifically to accommodate boost pressure safely. Its combination of a relatively compact four-cylinder footprint with genuinely strong performance made it a favorite engine for chassis swaps well beyond its original applications, and it built a significant motorsport reputation across drifting, time attack, and circuit racing disciplines where its tunability and response were highly valued.
As with most turbocharged performance engines of its era, the SR20DET rewards careful maintenance and can be unforgiving of neglect. It is genuinely sensitive to poor or overly aggressive tuning, and a qualified, experienced tuner is essential before making significant modifications - a poorly tuned SR20DET is far more likely to suffer engine damage than a conservatively tuned one.
