Description
The Fiat 1.3 MultiJet is the smallest and one of the most widely known members of the MultiJet family. Introduced in 2003, this 1248 cc turbo diesel engine quickly became famous for bringing modern common-rail diesel efficiency to small city cars and superminis. Although commonly marketed as a 1.3, its exact displacement is 1.248 liters, and it became one of Fiat's most successful diesel engines ever.
Fiat developed the 1.3 MultiJet to deliver very low fuel consumption, compact packaging, and modern emissions performance in small front-wheel-drive vehicles. The engine uses a four-cylinder DOHC layout, common-rail direct injection, turbocharging, and a compact design that suited lightweight hatchbacks and small MPVs extremely well. Depending on version and generation, output ranged from about 70 to 95 HP, with torque typically in the 180 to 200 Nm range.
In real-world use, the 1.3 MultiJet became popular because it offered genuine diesel torque and excellent economy in cars such as the Fiat Panda, Punto, 500, and Doblo. It was also rebadged for many other manufacturers, which underlines just how important it became in the small diesel segment. This is the MultiJet branch most people associate with economy-first urban diesel motoring.
