Description
The Fiat MultiJet is not one single engine but a family of Fiat common-rail turbo diesel engines that expanded across multiple displacements and applications. Introduced in the early 2000s as an evolution of Fiat's earlier JTD diesel technology, MultiJet improved combustion control by allowing multiple injections per cycle, which helped deliver quieter operation, better low-speed response, lower emissions, and improved fuel economy. In practice, the MultiJet name became one of Fiat's most important diesel technologies and was used far beyond Fiat-badged cars.
The development of the MultiJet family focused on refining the common-rail diesel formula for both small passenger cars and larger mainstream vehicles. Over time, the family grew through major displacement branches such as the 1.3, 1.6, 1.9, and 2.0 MultiJet units, with output, torque, and intended use varying significantly between them. Depending on the exact version, these engines were sold under many different names across the wider industry, including JTDm, CDTI, TiD, TTiD, VCDi, and DDiS.
In real-world use, MultiJet engines became popular because they combined strong diesel torque with good fuel economy and wide availability. They appeared in Fiat, Alfa Romeo, Lancia, Opel, Saab, Suzuki, Chevrolet, and other brands, which says a lot about how successful the core engineering was. The term MultiJet therefore refers to a broad diesel family rather than one exact specification, which is why this page needs child engines instead of pretending that all MultiJet variants are the same.
