Citroen
Citroen BlueHDi 1.5 is a 1.5L (1499 cc) diesel engine with 100-130 HP, 250-300 Nm, 16.0:1 compression ratio. Typical service life: 250,000+ km with proper maintenance.
Description
The Citroën BlueHDi 1.5 (also known as the DV5 or EB2DT in PSA Group documentation) is a 1.5-liter turbocharged inline-four diesel engine developed jointly by Citroën and Peugeot under the PSA Group umbrella. Introduced in 2017 and still in production, it was designed from the ground up as a modern, compact diesel that could meet Euro 6 emissions requirements without the bulk and complexity of larger diesel units. The BlueHDi name itself refers to PSA's multi-stage emissions treatment system, which sets this engine apart from simpler diesel designs in terms of how thoroughly it manages what leaves the exhaust.
The driving force behind the BlueHDi 1.5's development was a straightforward challenge: deliver the torque and fuel economy that diesel buyers expect from a small family car engine, while hitting emissions targets that would have been unreachable with a conventional diesel treatment setup. PSA's answer was to combine a diesel particulate filter with a Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system using AdBlue — a urea-based fluid injected into the exhaust stream upstream of the SCR catalyst. The chemical reaction between the AdBlue and the exhaust gases converts nitrogen oxides into harmless nitrogen and water vapour. This two-stage approach to emissions control is why the BlueHDi 1.5 achieves Euro 6 compliance while maintaining the low fuel consumption figures that make it commercially appealing.
The engine is built around a cast iron cylinder block — a deliberate choice that provides good dimensional stability under the thermal and mechanical loads of diesel combustion — topped by an aluminum alloy cylinder head with a DOHC 16-valve layout. The cylinder bores are finished with a plasma-sprayed coating for improved wear resistance and reduced friction over high mileage. A timing chain drives the camshafts, requiring no scheduled replacement. The Common Rail injection system operates at high pressure to deliver precise, multi-event fuel injection per combustion cycle, supporting clean combustion at low load and strong torque delivery when demand increases. The compression ratio is 16.0:1, standard for this type of direct-injection diesel. An EGR system works alongside the DPF and SCR to further reduce raw NOx emissions before the exhaust gases even reach the aftertreatment system.
With a displacement of 1,499 cc, the BlueHDi 1.5 produces 100 hp (75 kW) to 130 hp (96 kW) depending on tune, with torque ranging from 250 to 300 Nm — generous figures for a 1.5-liter diesel and the main reason the engine feels relaxed and unhurried in everyday use. The firing order is 1-3-4-2. Oil capacity is 3.5 liters with PSA specifying 5W-30 API SN synthetic oil. Operating temperature is maintained between 88 and 105 degrees Celsius, with a thermostat opening between 88 and 92 degrees. The engine is rated for over 250,000 km with proper maintenance.
The BlueHDi 1.5 has been fitted across a broad range of PSA Group vehicles, including the Citroën C4, C5 Aircross, Berlingo, and SpaceTourer, along with equivalent Peugeot-badged variants. In all of these applications the engine's strengths are the same: strong low-end torque that makes the car feel effortlessly quick from low speeds, genuine fuel efficiency in real-world driving, and a refinement level that is competitive for a small diesel. The combination of modest displacement, high torque, and the fuel savings enabled by the SCR system makes it a strong choice for anyone covering significant mileage in a family car or van.
In PSA technical documentation and parts systems the engine is referenced under codes including DV5R, DV5RC, and DV5RD, reflecting differences in power output and application. The shared development with Peugeot means the engine is essentially identical across both brands, which benefits owners directly through a wide parts availability network and a large pool of specialist knowledge. Where modern diesel engines are concerned, the BlueHDi 1.5 represents a well-thought-out balance of performance, economy, and compliance — and one that has held up well across a wide range of applications since its introduction.
