Description

The Subaru EJ257 is a 2.5-liter turbocharged horizontally-opposed ("boxer") four-cylinder petrol engine produced from 2004 to 2014, used as the flagship engine of the Impreza WRX STI as well as the Forester STI and Legacy GT, and one of the most tuned and enthusiast-celebrated engines in Subaru's history. Building on the broader EJ platform with a stronger, closed-deck engine block specifically to withstand higher boost pressures, the EJ257 was engineered as the performance halo variant within the wider EJ family.

Producing 305hp and 393Nm of torque from a single turbocharger and a comparatively low 8.2:1 compression ratio to safely support boost, the EJ257's horizontally-opposed layout gives the WRX STI a notably low center of gravity, contributing directly to its renowned handling balance, while its distinctive exhaust note - a product of the boxer engine's unequal-length exhaust manifold - is instantly recognizable even to non-enthusiasts. Ownership of the EJ257 requires awareness of several well-documented issues. It is genuinely sensitive to fuel quality and demands premium-grade fuel consistently to avoid knock and protect the high-compression, high-boost combustion process. Head gasket problems, a broader EJ-family concern, remain relevant on the EJ257 and any used example should be checked carefully for cooling system health and prior head gasket work; the closed-deck block helps ringland durability but does not eliminate head gasket risk. Ringland failure itself is a well-known risk on modified engines, particularly those tuned aggressively without appropriate supporting hardware, and a car's tuning and modification history should be scrutinized closely before purchase. The timing belt is critical on this interference engine and must be replaced on schedule without exception. Oil consumption can be elevated, especially on modified examples running higher boost levels, and turbo lag is noticeable by current standards given the single-turbo, non-variable-geometry design. The horizontally-opposed layout also makes major repairs, including head gasket replacement, considerably more labour-intensive - and therefore more expensive - than on a comparable inline engine, often 20-30 hours of shop time in addition to parts.
