Description

The Subaru EJ20/EJ25 is a family of horizontally-opposed ("boxer") four-cylinder petrol engines produced from 1989 to 2019, spanning displacements from 2.0 to 2.5 liters and both naturally aspirated and turbocharged configurations, and forming the backbone of Subaru's all-wheel-drive lineup for three decades, including the Impreza WRX/STI, Legacy, Outback, and Forester. Few engine families are as closely tied to their manufacturer's identity - the EJ's flat-four layout and rally-bred turbocharged variants defined what a "Subaru" meant to enthusiasts worldwide.

The horizontally-opposed configuration, with pairs of pistons moving outward and inward in opposition to each other rather than up and down in a line, gives the EJ family an unusually low center of gravity for the vehicles it's fitted to - a genuine handling benefit that Subaru's AWD models are known for - along with inherently good primary and secondary balance and a distinctive flat-four exhaust note recognizable even to non-enthusiasts. Across the family, output spans from around 150hp in naturally aspirated, non-turbo Legacy and Forester applications up to 310hp in the most powerful turbocharged WRX STI variants, with compression ratios ranging from as low as 8.2:1 on high-boost turbo versions up to 10.0:1 on naturally aspirated variants. The EJ family's turbocharged versions in particular built an enormous rally motorsport reputation, contributing directly to Subaru's multiple World Rally Championship victories.

The EJ family's most significant and widely known issue is head gasket failure, particularly on naturally aspirated 2.5-liter versions, a problem serious enough that virtually every prospective buyer of an EJ-powered Subaru should be aware of it and should check cooling system health and any history of head gasket work carefully before purchase. The timing belt is absolutely critical on this interference engine design and must be replaced every 100,000km without exception - belt failure causes immediate and expensive valve damage. On turbocharged variants, particularly the high-output EJ257, ringland (piston ring land) failures are a well-known risk when the engine has been tuned aggressively without matching hardware upgrades, so a modified example's tuning history and supporting modifications should be scrutinized closely. The horizontally-opposed layout, while excellent for handling, makes many routine repairs more time-consuming and therefore more expensive in labour than an equivalent inline engine, since the cylinder heads sit low and to the sides rather than on top of the block. Oil consumption is also a fairly common complaint on higher-mileage examples and should be monitored with regular level checks.
