The Subaru EZ36 is a 3.6-liter naturally aspirated horizontally-opposed ("boxer") six-cylinder petrol engine produced from 2007 to 2019, used in the more premium and comfort-oriented Subaru models such as the Legacy, Outback, and Tribeca, where it served as the flagship engine offering a smoother and more refined alternative to Subaru's turbocharged four-cylinder options.
Producing 256hp and 350Nm of torque, the EZ36 uses the same horizontally-opposed layout as Subaru's smaller EJ-family fours, extended to six cylinders, giving it an unusually low center of gravity for a six-cylinder engine and genuinely excellent inherent balance, resulting in a smooth, refined operating character quite different from the more characterful, higher-strung feel of Subaru's turbocharged flat-fours. Driving enthusiasts sometimes find the EZ36 underwhelming compared with Subaru's turbocharged offerings, since it prioritizes comfort and refinement rather than outright excitement, and the aftermarket tuning and support community is considerably smaller than for the EJ-family turbo engines, reflecting its lower production volumes and more mainstream positioning. As with the smaller EJ-family engines, the horizontally-opposed six-cylinder layout makes many repairs more labour-intensive - and therefore costlier - than a comparable inline or V6 engine, since the low-mounted cylinder heads are less accessible.
