The Hyundai/Kia Smartstream 1.6 T-GDI is a 1.6-liter turbocharged, direct-injection inline-four petrol engine introduced in 2019 as part of Hyundai-Kia's modern Smartstream engine family, developed to deliver genuinely strong performance alongside meaningfully improved efficiency compared with the group's earlier turbocharged Gamma engines. It is used in performance-leaning compact models including the Kia Ceed GT, XCeed, and ProCeed, positioning it as one of the more engaging engines in Hyundai-Kia's modern lineup.
Producing 180hp and 265Nm of torque from 1,598cc, the Smartstream 1.6 T-GDI uses a DOHC 16-valve head, a single turbocharger, direct injection, and Hyundai's Continuously Variable Valve Duration (CVVD) technology, which - unlike conventional variable valve timing that only shifts when the valves open and close - can also vary how long the valves stay open, allowing the engine to optimize its combustion cycle across a wider range of load and RPM conditions than earlier-generation turbocharged Hyundai-Kia engines.
