Description

The Ford 5.0L Coyote V8 is a naturally aspirated DOHC V8 petrol engine produced since 2011, developed as the modern successor to Ford's earlier Modular V8 engines and best known as the standard engine in the current Ford Mustang GT, as well as high-performance variants including the Boss 302, Bullitt, Mach 1, and Dark Horse, and the F-150 pickup. It represents Ford's return to a genuinely high-revving, high-specific-output naturally aspirated V8 after years of the company's Modular engines prioritizing broader, torque-focused tuning.

Producing between 360 and 500hp depending on generation and application, with torque between 515 and 569Nm, the Coyote uses a DOHC 32-valve head, twin independent variable camshaft timing, direct injection on later revisions, and a compression ratio as high as 12.0:1 on the most recent, highest-output versions. Across multiple generations since its 2011 introduction, Ford has progressively increased both power output and rev capability, giving the Coyote a genuinely different character from the torque-heavy American V8s of previous decades - it revs freely to over 7,000rpm in its most aggressive Mustang applications, more akin to a European sports car engine than a traditional American pushrod V8.
