Description
The Ford 4.6L Modular V8 is one of the best-known members of Ford's overhead-cam Modular engine family. Introduced for the 1991 model year, it replaced older pushrod V8s in many Ford, Lincoln, and Mercury vehicles and remained in production until 2014. Over its long life it appeared in passenger cars, police sedans, pickups, vans, and performance Mustangs, which is why it should be treated as a family-level engine entry rather than a single fixed-spec unit.
All 4.6-liter Modular V8s share a 4,601 cc displacement, a 90.2 mm bore, a 90.0 mm stroke, and a chain-driven camshaft layout, but they were built in several substantially different forms. Depending on application, the engine was offered as a 2-valve SOHC, 3-valve SOHC with variable cam timing, or 4-valve DOHC design. Block material also varied by version, with both cast-iron and aluminum blocks used across the family, while aluminum cylinder heads were standard.
Output changed dramatically depending on version and application. Civilian 2-valve engines sat near the lower end of the range, truck and 3-valve versions were stronger in torque, and high-performance DOHC variants such as the Mustang Cobra pushed the family much higher. Because of that spread, this card represents the broader 4.6 Modular V8 family and not just one Panther, Mustang, or truck tune.
