Description

Alfa Romeo has always been willing to solve problems differently from everyone else, and the Twin Spark engine is a good example of that mindset. Rather than chasing better combustion through direct injection or variable valve timing systems in an era when those technologies were expensive and not yet proven at scale, Alfa Romeo's engineers fitted two spark plugs per cylinder and placed them symmetrically on opposite sides of the combustion chamber. The result was faster, more complete combustion, lower emissions, and better fuel economy - achieved with a mechanical solution that was simple, durable, and applicable across a wide family of engines spanning displacements from 1.4 to 2.0 liters. The Twin Spark family was produced from 1986 to 2010 and became the defining engine of Alfa Romeo's road cars through the 1990s and 2000s.

The Twin Spark concept was not an entirely new idea when Alfa Romeo developed it - racing engines had used multiple plugs per cylinder for decades. What was unusual was Alfa's decision to engineer it into a production family car engine at a time when competitors were still running single-plug combustion chambers. Each cylinder fires two plugs simultaneously from opposite sides of the chamber, creating two flame fronts that meet in the middle. This means the charge burns faster and more uniformly than a single-plug arrangement can achieve, completing combustion before the piston has descended far into its power stroke. The practical effects are measurable: fuel consumption drops, residual emissions improve, and the engine can tolerate a slightly higher compression ratio than a comparable single-plug design.

The Twin Spark units are built around an aluminum alloy cylinder block and aluminum alloy cylinder head, keeping weight down for a four-cylinder of its output range. The DOHC cylinder head carries 16 valves - four per cylinder - with the two spark plugs positioned between the camshafts on each cylinder. No hydraulic lifters are fitted, so valve clearances require periodic manual adjustment. The timing drive is a belt, requiring replacement every 120,000 km or six years - whichever comes first - with the water pump typically changed at the same interval. Fuelling is handled by a Multi Point Injection system with individual injectors per cylinder. The firing order is 1-3-4-2.

Depending on the variant and displacement, the Twin Spark family covers power outputs from 120 hp (88 kW) to 170 hp (125 kW), with torque ranging from 145 to 206 Nm. Compression ratio across the range is typically 10.2:1, requiring a minimum of 95 RON fuel. Oil capacity is 4.3 liters and Alfa Romeo specifies Selenia 5W-40 synthetic oil, a specification that reflects the engine's aluminium construction and relatively tight tolerances. Operating temperature is maintained between 88 and 105 degrees Celsius. With consistent maintenance the Twin Spark is rated for 250,000+ km.

The Twin Spark engine was the powerplant for some of the most characterful Alfa Romeos of its era, including the 155 (1992-1998), 156 (1997-2007), 147 (2000-2010), and GT coupe. These cars built a devoted following not just for their looks and handling but specifically for how the Twin Spark engine felt and sounded in use. The combination of free-revving DOHC architecture with the twin-plug combustion efficiency produces an engine that rewards high-rpm driving without punishing you when traffic forces a more relaxed approach. Real-world fuel consumption of 7-10 liters per 100 km is respectable for a naturally aspirated petrol engine covering this power range.

The engine family is referred to across Alfa Romeo documentation and owner communities as the Twin Spark, TS, or simply by displacement codes such as 1.6 TS, 1.8 TS, and 2.0 TS - the 2.0 TS being the most sought-after variant for its combination of torque and high-rev character. While the system has since been superseded by direct injection and variable valve timing technologies that achieve similar combustion goals through different means, the Twin Spark's elegant mechanical simplicity and the driving character it gave to a generation of Alfa Romeo models have ensured it remains fondly remembered by anyone who has spent time behind the wheel of the cars it powered.
