Description

The VQ35DE is Nissan's 3.5-liter V6 and, honestly, one of the engines that made people take the company seriously again in the early 2000s. It arrived around 2001 as the follow-up to the VQ30DE and spread across the lineup surprisingly fast: Altima, Maxima, Murano, Pathfinder, Quest, the 350Z, the Skyline and the Elgrand minivan in Japan. Infiniti used it too, which is why you'll find it under the G35 and FX35 badges, and Renault even bought a version of it (the V4Y) for the Vel Satis and Espace. Remarkably, it stayed in production for more than two decades.

For its time the design was quite modern. Aluminum block and heads, a 60-degree V layout, four valves per cylinder and two overhead cams on each bank. Continuously variable valve timing works on the intake side, which goes a long way toward that wide, flat torque curve people like so much. The cams are driven by chains - one primary and two secondary - so there's no belt to remember. Bore and stroke are 95.5 x 81.4 mm, giving 3,498 cc, and the compression ratio lands somewhere between 10.0 and 10.6:1 depending on the version. Valve clearance is set with shims instead of hydraulic lifters, which means a light tick isn't automatically a sign of trouble.

Power depends a lot on where the engine ended up. Family cars like the Altima and Murano make roughly 240–265 hp, while the sportier tunes in the 350Z and G35 push towards 280–300 hp. Across all versions the figures run from about 228 to 300 hp, with 334–371 Nm of torque. It pulls cleanly, sounds better the higher you rev it and never feels strained, which probably explains why Ward's put it on its 10 Best Engines list for several years running in the 2000s.

It isn't flawless though. Early cars (roughly 2002–2006) have a reputation for drinking oil, and the pre-catalysts can crumble and send bits back into the cylinders if a check-engine light gets ignored for too long. The timing chain guides also get tired on high-mileage examples, usually announcing it with a rattle on cold starts. None of that is unique to Nissan, and plenty of VQ35DE engines run well past 250,000 km as long as the oil gets changed on time.

These days it's still a popular swap and a common sight on the used market. If you're shopping for one, look at the service history first and the badge second.
