Description

The Audi 5-cylinder 20v Turbo is one of the most important performance engines in Audi history. Introduced in the early 1990s, this 2.2-liter turbocharged inline-five carried the brand's rally-bred five-cylinder tradition into road-going S models. It became the heart of cars such as the Audi S2, S4, and RS2 Avant, and helped define Audi's performance identity during the quattro era.

The engine was developed as the 20-valve evolution of Audi's earlier turbocharged five-cylinder units, with the goal of improving breathing, responsiveness, and high-speed power while keeping the strong mid-range torque that made the layout so effective. A DOHC 20-valve cylinder head, electronic engine management, and the KE-Jetronic with Turbo Management fuel system allowed Audi to deliver 220 HP and 285 Nm in reliable factory tune. Conservative boost calibration also left useful headroom for tuning, which is one reason this engine remains so highly regarded.

In production form, the 5-cylinder 20v Turbo combined strong low-end pull with a distinctive exhaust note and a broad powerband that suited Audi's all-wheel-drive performance cars. It worked equally well in fast road use and high-speed touring, and its durability made it a favorite base for tuned street and track builds.

Depending on version and market, this engine is commonly identified by codes such as AAN, ABY, and ADU. It is also often referred to as the Audi 2.2 20V Turbo, Audi 2.2T, or simply the 20V Turbo five-cylinder. All of these names refer to closely related versions of Audi's 2.2-liter 20-valve turbocharged inline-five used in the brand's high-performance models of the period.
