Description

The Mazda Skyactiv-D 1.5 is a 1.5-liter turbocharged inline-four diesel engine introduced in 2014 as part of Mazda's SKYACTIV-D family, engineered around an unusually low compression ratio for a diesel engine - 14.8:1, compared with the 16:1-18:1 typical of most rival diesels of the era. Used primarily in the Mazda2 and CX-3, it represents Mazda's characteristically different engineering approach: rather than relying on complex, expensive exhaust aftertreatment to control emissions, Mazda sought to reduce the formation of NOx and particulates at the combustion stage itself, through a lower compression ratio combined with a two-stage turbocharging system and precisely optimized fuel injection timing.

The lower compression ratio reduces peak combustion temperatures compared with a conventional diesel, which in turn reduces NOx formation before it happens, allowing Mazda to meet strict emissions standards with a comparatively simpler aftertreatment system than many rivals require. This also results in a notably quieter, smoother-running diesel than the harsher, more agricultural character some drivers associate with earlier-generation diesel engines, while still delivering the traditional diesel benefits of low fuel consumption and abundant low-end torque, with 270Nm available from a small 1.5-liter unit producing 105hp.

Because the Skyactiv-D 1.5 was engineered specifically to minimize its dependence on complex emissions equipment, its ownership experience is somewhat simpler than that of many rival diesels, though it is not entirely free of the maintenance considerations common to all modern diesel engines. The exhaust aftertreatment system can, on occasion, develop issues, and owners should be aware that diesel particulate filter regeneration cycles - short periods where the engine runs slightly differently to burn off accumulated soot - are a normal part of diesel operation and are best supported by occasional longer drives rather than exclusively short trips. The EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) valve, common to all modern diesels, benefits from periodic cleaning to prevent carbon buildup affecting performance. Fuel and injector quality matter more for diesel engines generally, and the high-pressure injection system is sensitive to contaminated or poor-quality fuel.
