Description

The Renault F4R is a naturally aspirated four-cylinder 2.0-liter engine widely used in Renault vehicles from 1999 to 2020. This engine was installed in popular models like Megane, Laguna, Scenic, and Romanian Dacia Duster, making it one of the most common engines in the European market. The cast iron cylinder block ensures durability, with aluminum cylinder head containing 16 valves and DOHC system. The engine features multi-point fuel injection and distributorless electronic ignition. Later versions received variable valve timing system for improved elasticity and economy. The F4R develops power from 135 to 165 horsepower depending on modification at 5750 RPM and torque of 185-195 Nm at 3750 RPM. These characteristics provide good dynamics for mid-class cars and sufficient pulling power for overtaking and mountain driving. This engine's feature is its versatility and reliability. The F4R is undemanding regarding fuel quality and can stably run on 92 octane gasoline, though 95 octane is recommended for optimal operation. The engine design is relatively simple, simplifying diagnostics and repairs. The engine has belt-driven timing that requires replacement every 90-120 thousand kilometers depending on operating conditions. If the belt breaks, the engine doesn't suffer serious damage due to special piston design with valve recesses. F4R fuel consumption is 7-10 liters per 100 km depending on the car and driving style. With calm highway driving, 6-7 liters per 100 km can be achieved. The engine is well-suited for both city operation and long trips. Among F4R advantages are low maintenance costs, wide parts availability, and repair simplicity. Weak points may include ignition coils and oxygen sensors at high mileage. With proper care, the engine can cover over 250-300 thousand kilometers without major repairs.
