Renault TCe 1.3 Engine Specs

The Renault TCe 1.3 is a 1.3-liter turbocharged inline-four petrol engine produced since 2018, co-developed with Mercedes-Benz under the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi and Daimler engineering partnership, and used across the Megane, Scenic, Kadjar, Koleos, Nissan Qashqai and X-Trail, and even the Mercedes A-Class. This cross-manufacturer development gave the TCe 1.3 a level of engineering refinement that distinguishes it from Renault's older, purely in-house small-displacement engines.

Producing between 130 and 160hp and strong torque of 240-270Nm from just 1,332cc, the TCe 1.3 uses a DOHC head, direct fuel injection, a single turbocharger, and a compression ratio of 10.3:1, delivering genuinely strong low-end and mid-range torque that makes it feel considerably larger than its modest displacement suggests, well suited to the mid-size crossovers and SUVs it's most commonly fitted to across the Renault-Nissan-Mercedes family.

As with virtually all modern turbocharged direct-injection engines, the TCe 1.3 is prone to gradual carbon buildup on the intake valves over high mileage, since fuel is sprayed directly into the combustion chamber rather than over the valves as with older port-injection designs; periodic intake cleaning is a sensible preventive measure as mileage accumulates. The turbocharger requires attentive maintenance, with quality oil and consistent, on-schedule change intervals mattering considerably more here than on a naturally aspirated engine. A timing chain drive removes scheduled belt replacement from the maintenance schedule, helping keep long-term running costs down. As a relatively young, shared-development engine, long-term reliability data across its full range of applications is still accumulating, though the Mercedes engineering partnership and the engine's use in a premium-badged Mercedes model are generally seen as reassuring signs of underlying quality. With attentive maintenance respecting the manufacturer's specified service intervals, the TCe 1.3 delivers genuinely strong performance and efficiency across a wide range of Renault, Nissan, and Mercedes applications.
