Description

The Renault K4M is a 1.6-liter naturally aspirated inline-four petrol engine produced since 1999, one of the most widely used engines across the entire Renault-Nissan Alliance and Dacia lineup, found in everything from the Clio, Megane, Scenic, and Laguna to the Logan, Sandero, Duster, and Dokker, as well as the Nissan Almera, Primera, Tiida, and Note, and the Samsung SM3 in Korea. Few engines in this database have been fitted to as many different nameplates across as many different brands.

Producing 110hp and 148Nm of torque from 1,598cc, the K4M uses a DOHC 16-valve aluminum head and a compression ratio of 9.8:1, with conventional multi-point fuel injection keeping the design mechanically simple and inexpensive to maintain. This straightforward approach - no turbocharger, no direct injection - has made the K4M one of the most trusted and dependable engines in the Renault-Nissan-Dacia range, particularly prized in the budget-focused Logan, Sandero, and Duster models where low purchase price and low running costs are the primary buying considerations.

Reliability is a strong point for the K4M, benefiting from decades of refinement and an enormous production volume that has thoroughly proven the design across a huge range of climates and operating conditions worldwide. A handful of maintenance items are worth checking on a used example. The timing belt is a critical, interference-engine component and must be replaced strictly on schedule along with the water pump, since belt failure causes significant valve damage. Some examples develop minor oil leaks from valve cover or crankshaft seals with age, generally inexpensive to address. Spark plugs and ignition coils should be replaced according to schedule to maintain smooth running and fuel economy. Given the K4M's extraordinary reach across Renault, Nissan, Dacia, and Samsung vehicles worldwide, parts availability and mechanic familiarity are outstanding almost everywhere, making it one of the safest and cheapest engines to own and maintain in this entire database.
