The Mitsubishi 4G63T is a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four petrol engine produced from 1988 to 2007, and one of the most celebrated and widely modified Japanese performance engines of all time thanks to its central role in the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution I through IX and the first two generations of the Eclipse. Alongside its naturally aspirated siblings used in the Galant and Outlander, the turbocharged 4G63T became legendary in rally and grassroots motorsport circles for its combination of a genuinely strong iron block and remarkable tuning headroom.
Across the various Evolution generations, output climbed from around 195hp in earlier applications up to 291hp in the most powerful factory Evo variants, with torque between 278 and 407Nm, achieved through DOHC 16-valve architecture and compression ratios lowered to as little as 7.8:1 in the highest-boost versions to safely support increased turbo pressure.
