Description

The Renault K9K 732 is a specific factory tune of Renault's 1.5-liter turbocharged inline-four common-rail diesel engine (dCi), part of the wider K9K family developed jointly with Nissan and used across the entire Renault-Nissan-Dacia Alliance. First introduced in 2001 and still in production in various forms more than two decades later, the K9K became one of the most widely produced small diesel engines in automotive history, thanks to its use across an enormous range of vehicles from the Clio and Micra to the Duster, Qashqai, and Mercedes Citan (supplied to Daimler under the Renault-Nissan-Mercedes alliance).

The 732 designation identifies this engine's specific state of tune within the K9K family: 260 Nm of torque delivered from 1,750rpm, produced from 2008 to 2016, and used primarily in the Renault Megane III, Scenic III, Captur, and Nissan Qashqai J10. Like all K9K variants, it uses a DOHC 16-valve head, common-rail direct injection, and a compression ratio of 17.5:1, and it has earned a strong reputation across the Alliance for combining genuinely low fuel consumption with the durability expected of a diesel engine used in high-mileage fleet and taxi service across Europe.

As with any common-rail diesel of this type, several maintenance items apply across the K9K family generally. The timing belt (or, on some later variants, timing chain) is a critical component that must be serviced strictly on schedule, since this is an interference engine where failure causes significant valve damage. Fuel injectors are sensitive to fuel quality and can develop deposits over high mileage, sometimes manifesting as rough idle or reduced performance; using good-quality fuel and occasional injector cleaning helps maintain long-term reliability. The EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) valve is prone to carbon buildup, particularly in stop-start urban driving, and periodic cleaning helps maintain smooth running and emissions compliance. On turbocharged variants, the turbocharger itself benefits from consistent oil quality and change intervals, since neglected servicing is one of the more common causes of premature turbo wear. Vehicles used mainly for short urban trips are more prone to soot-related issues in the exhaust aftertreatment system, and occasional longer highway drives help keep the system clear. With reasonable maintenance, the K9K family has proven itself capable of covering 300,000km or more, and its huge production volume across the Renault-Nissan-Dacia Alliance means parts availability and mechanic familiarity remain excellent almost everywhere.
