The Honda F20C is a 2.0-liter naturally aspirated inline-four petrol engine produced from 1999 to 2009 exclusively for the Honda S2000 roadster, and it remains one of the most celebrated naturally aspirated engines ever put into series production. At launch, its 240hp output from just 2.0 liters gave it a specific output of 120hp per liter - a figure that was, at the time, the highest of any naturally aspirated production car engine in the world, and one that has rarely been matched since without forced induction.
Achieving this required an unusually aggressive design even by Honda's VTEC standards. The F20C uses a DOHC VTEC head with a compression ratio of 11.7:1, forged internals capable of withstanding sustained high-RPM operation, and a redline of approximately 9,000rpm - extraordinary for a mass-production engine. Peak torque of 208Nm doesn't arrive until 7,500rpm, meaning the F20C has very little in the way of low-end urgency; it is an engine that must be revved hard to access its performance, with the VTEC changeover at around 6,000rpm marking a dramatic and audible shift in the engine's character as the secondary, high-lift cam profile engages.
This character is precisely what makes the F20C so admired by enthusiasts, but it also shapes what a buyer needs to know. Because meaningful power only arrives at very high RPM, the F20C can feel genuinely underwhelming in traffic or casual driving compared to a modern turbocharged engine with strong low-end torque - it demands commitment and high-RPM use to be enjoyed as intended, and that same high-RPM use is what the engine's maintenance requirements are built around. Oil consumption at high RPM is considered normal, particularly under track or spirited use, and levels should be checked more often than on a typical commuter engine; oil quality and change intervals matter more here than on almost any other engine in this database. The timing chain tensioner can develop noise with age, though outright failure is rare, and the VTEC solenoid's oil screens can clog on high-mileage or poorly maintained examples, dulling the VTEC engagement. Valve clearances should be checked and adjusted periodically as part of routine servicing. As the S2000 has become a firmly established collector car, both engines and replacement parts increasingly carry collector-level prices, and buyers should budget accordingly rather than expecting bargain running costs.
