The Honda B16A is a 1.6-liter naturally aspirated inline-four petrol engine produced from 1989 to 2001 as one of the earliest and most influential members of Honda's B-series, and the engine most responsible for establishing VTEC's reputation among enthusiasts worldwide. It powered a range of sporting Honda and Acura models including the Civic Si, CRX, Del Sol Si, and the Acura Integra GS-R, and remains one of the most sought-after Honda engines for both nostalgic and performance reasons.
What made the B16A remarkable in period was its specific output: 160hp from just 1.6 liters, with no turbocharging, was an extraordinary figure for a naturally aspirated production engine of its time. This was achieved through Honda's DOHC VTEC system, which switches to a much more aggressive camshaft profile above roughly 5,500-6,000rpm, transforming the character of the engine from a docile commuter unit at low revs into a genuinely high-revving sports engine as the tachometer climbs toward its roughly 8,000rpm redline. A compression ratio of 10.2:1, lightweight aluminum construction, and free-breathing cylinder head porting all contributed to an engine that rewards being driven hard - which is exactly what several generations of enthusiasts have done to it.
That enthusiasm for high-RPM use is also the source of the B16A's best-known wear points. The VTEC cam lobes themselves are susceptible to wear over very high mileage or sustained high-RPM operation, particularly if oil quality and change intervals have not been strictly maintained; camshaft replacement is not a minor expense when it becomes necessary. The VTEC solenoid, responsible for switching between the low and high cam profiles, requires genuinely clean oil to function correctly - cheap oil or extended change intervals can clog its fine oil passages and cause the VTEC engagement to become unreliable or fail altogether. Cylinder head gasket leaks can develop after roughly 150,000km, especially on engines that have seen frequent hard use, and the camshaft position sensor and idle control components are common, relatively minor failure points on aging examples. The timing belt is also critical on this interference engine and must never be allowed to run past its service interval.
Despite these wear items, the B16A has proven itself capable of remarkable durability even when driven hard and modified, and it remains backed by one of the largest aftermarket parts and tuning communities of any engine in this database, making ownership, repair, and upgrading straightforward even decades after production ended.
