Description

The Peugeot THP 1.6 is a 1.6-liter turbocharged, direct-injection inline-four petrol engine produced from 2007 to 2019, co-developed with BMW under a joint venture between the two manufacturers (the "Prince" engine family, also documented separately in this database under PSA), and used across a range of performance-oriented Peugeot, Citroën, and even Mini models, including the 207 GTI, 308 GTI, 508, Citroën DS3, C4, and the Mini Cooper S (R56).

Producing 150hp and 240Nm of torque from 1,598cc, the THP 1.6 uses a DOHC head, direct fuel injection, a single turbocharger, and a compression ratio of 10.5:1, delivering genuinely strong performance for its displacement that made it a popular choice for PSA's sportier hot-hatch models, including the well-regarded 207 GTI and 308 GTI. The engine's BMW co-development lineage brought a level of engineering rigor to this joint-venture unit that distinguished it from PSA's more mainstream, purely in-house engines of the same era.

As with any turbocharged direct-injection engine, the THP 1.6 is prone to gradual carbon buildup on the intake valves over high mileage, since fuel is injected directly into the combustion chamber rather than over the valves; periodic intake cleaning is a sensible preventive measure as mileage accumulates. The timing chain, used on this engine rather than a belt, has been a documented point of concern on some early examples, where chain stretch or tensioner wear can develop, sometimes producing a rattling noise on cold starts; this is worth having checked on any higher-mileage example, since a chain failure in this interference engine causes serious damage. The turbocharger requires attentive maintenance, with quality oil and consistent, on-schedule change intervals mattering considerably more here than on a naturally aspirated engine. Given the THP's use in performance-oriented hot hatches, many examples have seen spirited driving throughout their lives, and a thorough pre-purchase inspection focusing on timing chain condition and turbocharger health is particularly worthwhile.
