Description

The Volkswagen Group ANU is a specific factory code within the 1.9-liter turbocharged inline-four TDI diesel engine family, representing the Pumpe Düse (PD), or unit-injector, generation of this hugely influential engine line. Unlike the earlier VP37 rotary-pump codes in the same 1.9 TDI family, PD variants integrate the fuel injector and a small high-pressure pump into a single unit actuated directly by the camshaft for each cylinder, allowing considerably higher injection pressures, better atomization, and improved refinement and efficiency compared with the older pump-and-line system it replaced.

Produced from 1999 to 2006 and fitted to the Audi A4 B5 and Volkswagen Passat B5, the ANU produces 90hp and 240 Nm of torque from 1,896cc, using a SOHC 8-valve head and the camshaft-driven unit-injector system characteristic of this generation. This higher-pressure injection technology gave PD-equipped 1.9 TDI engines noticeably stronger performance and refinement than the earlier VP37 codes, at the cost of somewhat greater mechanical complexity and, notably, a distinctive clattering idle noise that PD engines are well known for among VW enthusiasts and owners alike.

The timing belt is a critical, interference-engine component and must be replaced strictly on schedule, and given the unit-injector camshaft's additional loading compared with earlier VP37 engines, using genuine or high-quality replacement parts and respecting VW's specified intervals matters even more here. The unit injectors themselves are precision components that can wear or fail with age, sometimes causing rough idle, smoke, or reduced performance, and injector replacement or reconditioning is a more specialized and costly job than on the simpler VP37 pump system. The camshaft lobes that actuate the injectors are a known wear point on some early PD examples if oil quality has been neglected, making consistent, correct-specification oil changes particularly important on this engine. The EGR valve and, on later, more emissions-compliant examples, the diesel particulate filter both benefit from occasional longer highway drives to stay clear of accumulated soot, particularly on vehicles used mainly for short urban trips. Given the huge production volume of the PD 1.9 TDI across VW, Audi, Seat, and Skoda, parts and specialist knowledge remain widely available.
