The Volkswagen Group EA113 2.0T FSI is a 2.0-liter turbocharged, direct-injection inline-four petrol engine produced from 2003 to 2012, developed as the successor to the 1.8T and best known for powering the Golf V and VI GTI, Jetta GLI, and Passat B6 2.0T. It represented a major step forward for VW's performance engine technology, combining turbocharging with FSI (Fuel Stratified Injection) direct injection for the first time in a mainstream VW performance application.
Producing 200hp and 280Nm of torque from 1,984cc, the 2.0T FSI uses a DOHC 16-valve head, direct injection, a single turbocharger, and a comparatively high compression ratio for a turbocharged engine, resulting in strong, responsive performance that helped re-establish the Golf GTI's reputation as one of the benchmark hot hatches of its era. The combination of direct injection and turbocharging gave this engine noticeably sharper throttle response and better efficiency than the older multi-point-injected 1.8T it succeeded.
As with virtually all direct-injection turbocharged engines, the 2.0T FSI is prone to carbon buildup on the intake valves over high mileage, since fuel is injected directly into the combustion chamber rather than over the valves as with the 1.8T's port injection; periodic intake cleaning is a well-known and important maintenance item for this specific engine, and neglecting it can noticeably affect performance and idle quality over time. The timing chain, used on this engine, has been a documented area of concern on some early production examples, where chain stretch or tensioner wear can develop and produce a rattling noise - given this is an interference engine, this is one of the most important things to check on a used example. The turbocharger requires attentive maintenance, with quality oil and consistent change intervals mattering considerably. High-pressure fuel pump wear has also been documented on some examples. Given the 2.0T FSI's popularity in the GTI, parts availability and specialist tuning knowledge remain excellent.
