Description
The Volkswagen Group AAZ, marketed as the "1.9 TD", is a 1.9-liter turbocharged inline-four indirect-injection (IDI) diesel engine produced from 1991 to 1996, representing the last generation of Volkswagen's older-style swirl-chamber diesel technology before the company's landmark switch to direct-injection TDI engines later in the 1990s. It was used in the Golf III, Jetta III, Passat B4, Vento, Audi 80 B4, and Seat Toledo I.
Producing 75hp and 150Nm of torque from 1,896cc, the AAZ uses an indirect-injection combustion system, where fuel is injected into a small pre-chamber (swirl chamber) rather than directly into the main combustion chamber as with later TDI engines. This design is inherently less efficient and less powerful than direct injection, but it is also mechanically simpler and generally quieter and smoother-running at idle than the direct-injection engines that replaced it, a trait some owners of this era's diesels still remember fondly.
Because the AAZ predates VW's TDI generation, it lacks the higher-pressure injection, intercooling sophistication, and electronic engine management refinement of the 1.9 TDI engines that followed it, and its performance figures reflect this - modest even by the standards of small diesels from the same decade. That said, the AAZ has built a strong reputation for basic mechanical durability, benefiting from its comparative simplicity: there is no high-pressure common-rail or unit-injector system to fail, and the pre-chamber indirect-injection design is generally more tolerant of variable fuel quality than later direct-injection diesels. The timing belt is a critical, interference-engine component and must be replaced strictly on schedule along with the water pump, since belt failure causes significant valve damage - an essential check given these engines are now more than a quarter-century old in any surviving example. Glow plugs are particularly important for reliable cold starting on an indirect-injection engine, arguably more so than on later TDI engines, and should be inspected or replaced if cold-start performance has degraded. Given the AAZ's age, general age-related wear across the whole vehicle, not just the engine, should be the primary focus of any pre-purchase inspection.
