The Volkswagen Group EA288 is a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four common-rail diesel engine produced since 2012, developed as the direct successor to the long-running EA189/1.9-2.0 TDI PD family, and representing VW's current-generation clean diesel technology used across the Golf, Passat, Audi A3, and Skoda Octavia, among many other group models. It brought common-rail direct injection, more sophisticated emissions aftertreatment, and generally improved refinement compared with the unit-injector (PD) engines it replaced.
Producing between 143 and 204hp depending on specific tune and application, the EA288 uses a DOHC 16-valve head, common-rail direct injection, a turbocharger (variable-geometry on higher-output versions), and considerably more advanced emissions control technology than earlier VW Group diesels, including SCR (selective catalytic reduction) with AdBlue injection on most modern applications, reflecting the tightening emissions standards this engine generation was designed to meet.
As with any modern common-rail diesel, several maintenance items are worth understanding on used examples. AdBlue levels need periodic topping up, with most vehicles providing ample warning before running low. The diesel particulate filter requires periodic regeneration cycles, best supported by occasional longer highway drives rather than exclusively short urban trips - vehicles used mainly for short journeys are more prone to DPF-related warning lights. The EGR valve is prone to carbon buildup, particularly in stop-start urban driving, and periodic cleaning helps maintain smooth running and emissions compliance. The timing chain, used on this engine rather than a belt, benefits from periodic inspection at higher mileage. Given the EA288's status as VW's current mainstream diesel and its use across such a wide range of group vehicles, parts availability and mechanic familiarity are excellent, and its improved emissions technology has generally made it more dependable in day-to-day use than the diesel engines it replaced.
