Description
The second-generation Ford 3.5 EcoBoost V6 arrived for the 2017 model year and represented a substantial technical revision rather than a light refresh. Ford kept the same basic 3.5-liter twin-turbo concept but introduced a stronger cam-drive layout, revised valvetrain hardware, electronically actuated wastegates, and port injection alongside direct injection. The result was better response, stronger torque, and improvements in both emissions behavior and long-term intake cleanliness.
This generation is often referred to as the D35 version of the 3.5 EcoBoost family. It remained an aluminum 60-degree V6 with DOHC cylinder heads, 24 valves, twin turbochargers, and chain-driven cams, but the later fuel system and updated timing arrangement made it meaningfully different from the earlier engines. Depending on the application, outputs generally range from about 310 to 400 HP and from 542 to 678 Nm of torque.
In mainstream form, Gen 2 became the core 3.5 EcoBoost used in modern F-150, Transit, and Expedition applications. It is usually considered the more refined and desirable mainstream version of the family, though buyers still need to watch for cam phaser noise, expensive turbo-related repairs, and evidence of poor service intervals. It is a strong engine when maintained properly, especially in truck use where its low-end torque is a major advantage.
