Description

The Ford 3.5 EcoBoost HO (High Output) is a 3.5-liter twin-turbocharged V6 petrol engine produced since 2017, representing the most powerful mainstream production tune of Ford's second-generation 3.5 EcoBoost architecture, used specifically in the F-150 Raptor, Lincoln Navigator, and later high-performance Expedition variants. It was developed to give these performance-oriented trucks and SUVs genuinely strong power and torque without moving to a larger, heavier V8.

Producing between 440 and 450hp and a substantial 691Nm of torque from 3,496cc, the EcoBoost HO uses a DOHC 24-valve head, twin turbochargers, dual direct and port fuel injection, and a compression ratio of 10.0:1, tuned specifically for higher boost pressure and more aggressive performance than the standard Gen 2 3.5 EcoBoost used in mainstream F-150 applications. This makes it one of the most powerful V6 engines ever offered in a mainstream production truck, giving the Raptor genuinely quick, V8-like acceleration in a package that remains lighter than a comparable large-displacement naturally aspirated engine.

Given its higher state of tune, the EcoBoost HO places somewhat greater demands on its supporting systems than the standard-output Gen 2 engine, and maintaining strict service intervals matters correspondingly more. Oil quality and consistent, on-schedule changes are essential to protect the twin turbochargers under the higher boost pressures this tune runs, and the cooling system should be kept in excellent condition, particularly important given the Raptor's intended use in demanding off-road and high-load conditions where sustained heat can build quickly. The dual-injection system (combining direct and port injection) helps reduce - though not eliminate - the carbon buildup on intake valves common to purely direct-injected engines, and periodic inspection is still worthwhile at higher mileage. Spark plug replacement remains a relatively involved job on this tightly packaged twin-turbo V6 and should be budgeted for accordingly. With attentive maintenance respecting Ford's service schedule, the EcoBoost HO delivers genuinely impressive performance while retaining much of the underlying durability of the broader 3.5 EcoBoost family.
