Description
The Ford 3.5 EcoBoost GT is a 3.5-liter twin-turbocharged V6 petrol engine produced from 2017 to 2022 exclusively for the second-generation Ford GT supercar, representing the most extreme application of Ford's EcoBoost turbocharging philosophy: rather than using a traditional large-displacement naturally aspirated V8 as most supercar rivals do, Ford chose a smaller, lighter, twin-turbocharged V6 to save weight and improve both power delivery and packaging in the GT's extremely low, aerodynamically focused chassis.
Producing between 647 and 660hp and a substantial 746Nm of torque from 3,496cc, the GT-spec EcoBoost uses a DOHC 24-valve head, twin turbochargers, direct injection, and a compression ratio of 9.0:1, all developed with direct input from Ford's endurance racing program - the related EcoBoost racing engine won the GTE class at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2016. This motorsport-derived engineering gives the road-going GT's engine an unusually robust foundation for an engine producing this much power from a relatively compact displacement.
Because this engine was built in very limited numbers exclusively for a low-volume, extremely expensive supercar, ownership context is fundamentally different from any mainstream EcoBoost application: service, parts, and diagnostic work should be handled by Ford GT-trained specialists rather than a general workshop, and maintenance costs are correspondingly higher, in keeping with the car's exotic positioning. As with any high-output twin-turbocharged engine, oil quality and change intervals are critical to long-term reliability, and the cooling system - including the GT's multiple radiators and charge-air coolers - must be kept in excellent condition given the sustained high loads the engine is designed to handle at track speeds. Because so few examples exist and most are used sparingly, long-term high-mileage reliability data is limited compared with Ford's mainstream EcoBoost engines, though the racing-derived internals give reason for confidence when properly maintained. This is a halo engine built for a to a specific and extraordinary brief, and it should be evaluated, serviced, and valued accordingly rather than compared directly with any mainstream Ford EcoBoost application.
