The Toyota 1CD-FTV – also known as 1CDFTV, 1 CD-FTV, or simply D-4D – is a 2.0-liter turbocharged diesel engine that became Toyota's first step into modern common rail diesel technology. Introduced in 1999, this engine was developed specifically for European and other markets where diesel engines are popular, with the goal of offering strong fuel economy, low emissions, and enough power for everyday driving. You will find the 1CD-FTV in models like the Toyota Avensis, Corolla, RAV4, and Previa, where it had to prove that Toyota could build diesel engines that were just as reliable as their famous gasoline engines.
What makes the 1CD-FTV interesting is that it was Toyota's first attempt at using common rail direct injection in a production diesel engine.
